Why the Detour via the Mainland?
The re-registration inspection (Inspección previa a matriculación) for imported cars is available on Mallorca only in Manacor, with no online appointment and a waiting time. If the 30-day deadline is pressing or nothing is free in Manacor, the inspection on the Spanish mainland is a legally valid alternative. The Spanish Ficha Técnica is valid nationwide, no matter where you get it.
The big advantage for residents: via the Certificado de Viaje you get around 75 percent off ferries and domestic flights. That makes the trip cheap, especially if you take the car on the ferry anyway.
Mallorca or Mainland: The Difference
Important to understand: the steps and documents of re-registration are the same everywhere, because they are set nationally. Only the procedure at the ITV differs.
- Mallorca: since the 2025 reform the ITV service is run by the Consell de Mallorca (public authority). The pre-registration inspection runs through its Sección Administrativa de ITV via an administrative file (expediente), only in Manacor and with no online appointment.
- Mainland: there, private companies operate the ITV stations (for example Itevelesa, Applus+, SGS, TÜV). You can often request the inspection and submit the documents online, the station checks the papers within one to two days and then calls you to bring the car.
In short: on the mainland, access to the inspection is usually faster and more digital.
Step by Step via the Mainland
Step 1: Travel and the Certificado de Viaje
Get the Certificado de Viaje from your municipality (via the Empadronamiento) for the resident discount. Plan the crossing with the car on the ferry, for example to Valencia or Barcelona.
Step 2: Choose an ITV Station and Request an Appointment
Pick an ITV station in the target region and request the Inspección previa a matriculación de vehículo de importación, usually online or by phone. Unlike Manacor, there is normally a real appointment booking here.
Step 3: Submit the Documents and Have Them Checked
Submit the vehicle documents, often online in advance:
- Permiso de Circulación or Ficha Técnica from the country of origin
- CoC (Certificado de Conformidad) or Ficha Reducida
- Your ID document (NIE or TIE, passport)
The station usually checks the papers within one to two days and gets in touch once you should come with the car. Confirm the exact document list with the station in advance, it can vary slightly by operator.
Step 4: Present the Car and Receive the Ficha Técnica
You drive the car to the station and the technical inspection is carried out. The result is the Spanish Ficha Técnica (Tarjeta ITV). With it you head back to Mallorca for the remaining steps.
What Stays the Same Afterwards
From here the route is identical to re-registration on Mallorca, because the DGT and the tax office work nationally:
- Registration tax (IEDMT): pay via the Modelo 576 or exemption via the Modelo 06 (on change of residence).
- Municipal vehicle tax (IVTM): at your municipality on Mallorca.
- Spanish insurance: take out a policy.
- DGT application (Matriculación): online via the Sede Electrónica with Certificado Digital, or at the Jefatura of your province.
You can find the full flow of these steps in the guide Re-registering a Car Without a Gestoria.
Is It Worth It for You?
The mainland route is worth it mainly when the deadline is pressing and nothing is free in Manacor, or when you have to take the car to the mainland anyway. You save waiting time on access to the inspection and use the resident discount for the trip. Against that stand the travel time and effort. If you can take it easy, you simply stay on Mallorca with the temporary green plates and wait for the Manacor appointment.
Pitfalls
- Taxes and the DGT follow your residence: you do the ITV on the mainland, but the IVTM and the DGT application for your municipality and province in the Balearics.
- Confirm the documents in advance: ask the chosen station exactly what it needs for the pre-registration inspection, it varies slightly.
- Travelling with the car: as long as you are still driving on German plates within the deadlines, the crossing is unproblematic. Otherwise use the temporary green plates.
- Do not forget the CoC: without a CoC or Ficha Reducida the inspection fails on the mainland too.
