Rule of thumb for sizing: the battery should roughly match your nightly consumption. The Virtual Battery as a Low-Cost Alternative
Not everyone needs a physical battery. Many Spanish electricity providers now offer what is known as the virtual battery (batería virtual). With it, your fed-in surplus power is not only paid out at the low feed-in tariff but stored as a credit in euros and offset against later bills, in some cases across several months.
The upside: no purchase cost, no space needed, no wear. The downside: you usually pay a monthly fee, and the credit generally covers only the energy portion, not the fixed grid charges and taxes. The virtual battery pays off above all if you produce a lot of surplus in summer and consume more in winter. A physical battery makes more sense if you need a lot of power every evening or want to be covered during grid outages.
Is the virtual battery worth having on top of a physical battery? In most cases no. Anyone with a physical battery feeds in little and therefore has hardly any credit for the virtual battery. Choose one of the two solutions.
Subsidies on Mallorca and in Spain in 2026
Solar storage in Spain was subsidised for years through the national programme under Real Decreto 477/2021, funded by EU Next Generation money. In many regions those funds are used up, so do not rely on older accounts of the process; check the current status instead. The bodies responsible are the national energy institute IDAE and, at island level, the energy authority of the Balearic government.

Take your last twelve electricity bills and work out your daytime and nighttime consumption in kWh.
