The good news: combining solar panels and an electric car on Mallorca is one of the smartest investments you can make right now. With around 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, Mallorca offers ideal conditions - and the electricity you generate yourself costs you practically nothing.

How Big Does the Solar System Need to Be?

That depends on how much electricity you use overall and how much of it you want to dedicate to the car. As a rule of thumb:

  • An average household on Mallorca (4 people, air conditioning, pool) uses 7,000 to 10,000 kWh per year
  • An EV with a 60 kWh battery driving 15,000 km per year needs an additional 2,500 to 3,000 kWh
  • Total demand: around 10,000 to 13,000 kWh per year

An 8 kWp solar system on Mallorca produces around 10,000 to 12,000 kWh in an average year. That covers most of your total demand - car included. Add a battery (10 to 15 kWh) and you can also charge from your own buffer in the evening and at night, making you even less dependent on the grid.

For systems without storage, it is worth pairing the wallbox with an energy management system that automatically detects when enough solar power is flowing - and only then starts charging.

Subsidies in 2026: What the Combination Gets You

Spain subsidizes both solar installations and electric-car purchases. The Balearic government adds extra grants on top in 2026. What matters for the combination:

MOVES III (EV subsidy): This national program supports the purchase of a new electric car with 4,500 to 7,000 EUR if you scrap an old vehicle (over 7 years old). Wallbox installation is also eligible for up to 500 EUR. Details are on the official IDAE website.

Solar subsidies (Balearics): The Convocatoria de Ayudas para Autoconsumo supports grid-connected solar systems with self-consumption. Subsidy rates range from 15 to 40 percent of the investment cost depending on system size.

Combination advantage: There is no explicit "combo subsidy", but you can use both routes at the same time - MOVES III for the car and the Balearic grant for the solar system.

Watch out: deadlines and budgets

Subsidy programs are relaunched annually and are often exhausted quickly. Submit your applications as early in the year as possible and before installation - not afterwards. Most programs only fund new installations, not existing systems.

Which Wallboxes and Inverters Work Well Together

For the combination to run smoothly, the inverter, energy management system, and wallbox need to talk to each other. Some combinations proven in practice on Mallorca:

  • Fronius Symo + Wattpilot: The Wattpilot is Fronius's own wallbox, integrates seamlessly with Fronius inverters, and automatically routes surplus power to the car
  • SMA Sunny Boy + SMA EV Charger: Same principle within the SMA ecosystem, also widely used by Spanish installers
  • Growatt + an open wallbox (e.g. go-e Charger): A cheaper entry point, but requires an external energy management system (e.g. Home Assistant or evcc)

The open-source tool evcc is popular among tinkerers on Mallorca: it supports almost all common inverters and wallboxes and regulates charging fully automatically based on solar yield. Setup is more technically demanding, but very flexible.

Have your local installer explicitly confirm that the chosen components work together - not every electrician on the island is familiar with energy management systems.
