Your first apartment or finca on Mallorca is usually empty. No kitchen, no wardrobe, no bed. After the move you really do not want to spend weeks living out of boxes. Fortunately, getting furniture on Mallorca today is much easier than it was ten years ago. IKEA, large local furniture stores, a lively second-hand market, online retailers with island delivery - everything is available once you know where to look.
This article shows you where to furnish your home fastest, most affordably and most sustainably, and how to get rid of old pieces.
Buying Furniture on Mallorca
There are basically five routes:
- IKEA Palma: The quick standard for the basics
- Local furniture stores: For Mediterranean styles and custom pieces
- Second-hand and flea markets: For budget-friendly finds with character
- Online retailers: For wide choice and easy comparison
- Importing furniture from Germany: For high-quality existing pieces
In practice, most new residents combine approaches. IKEA for beds, wardrobes and kitchen, local suppliers for sofa or dining table, second-hand for chairs and accessories. A strategic approach to buying furniture can save several hundred euros.
Tip: Measure first, order second
Grab a tape measure and your phone and carefully measure all rooms, door widths, lifts and staircases. Many older Mallorca buildings have narrow doors and tight spiral staircases. A wardrobe that is too large to fit into the apartment turns a bargain into an expensive mistake.
IKEA Palma
IKEA Palma has been the backbone of furniture supply on the island since 2008. It sits in Son Fuster, easy to reach via the autopista from the airport or the city centre. Opening hours in 2026: Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 22:00, closed Sundays (like almost all furniture stores on Mallorca).
What Makes IKEA Palma Different
- Smaller range than on the mainland: Not all products are in stock, but they can be ordered
- Special customs handling: Some products are shipped by ferry from Valencia or Barcelona
- Island delivery: By lorry, typically 3 to 10 working days after ordering
- German-speaking service teams: Generally available for furniture and kitchen planning
- Furniture assembly: Available at extra cost via TaskRabbit partners or local tradespeople
IKEA Delivery
Delivery costs depend on postcode and weight. For a complete bedroom set you typically pay 30 to 60 EUR for delivery and 100 to 200 EUR for assembly. In remote parts of the island (Tramuntana villages, Cap de Formentor), delivery can cost 80 to 150 EUR, assembly the same.
IKEA Click and Collect
Order online, book a time slot in Palma, load the car and go. This saves delivery costs if you are in Palma anyway. The Click and Collect terminal is right at the goods exit.
Local Furniture Stores
Alongside IKEA, Mallorca has a number of established furniture stores with Mediterranean style, solid quality and often better personal service. They are not always cheaper, but often more durable and they fit better into island life.
Major Local Chains
- Conforama: Full range, branches in Palma and Manacor. Prices similar to IKEA, upholstered furniture slightly better.
- ADR Conforts: Own chain focused on sofas, beds and kitchens.
- Kibuc: Custom-fitted wardrobes and storage solutions.
- Muebles Riera: Family-run, Mallorcan-Mediterranean style.
- Piedra Tosca / El Paso 43: High-quality restaurant and home furniture in country-house style.
Custom-Made Furniture
Many Mallorcan carpenters (carpinteros) offer bespoke furniture. Built-in wardrobes, kitchen units, beds, shelving systems made to measure. Prices are higher than IKEA, but quality is considerably better. A custom-made wardrobe in oak or beech costs 1,500 to 4,000 EUR. Lead time is typically 4 to 10 weeks.
Our services directory helps you find verified carpenters with references, especially in the island interior and in Palma.
Second-Hand and Flea Markets
If you do not want to buy everything new straight away, Mallorca has a rich supply of second-hand furniture. The market is fed by three sources: long-term residents who are selling up, holiday homeowners renovating, and estate clearances.
Weekly Markets with Furniture
- Consell: Saturday, the island's largest second-hand market
- Santa Maria: Sunday, smaller but with many design finds
- Inca: Thursday, mainly livestock focus but also a furniture section
- Rastro Palma: Saturdays at Poligono Son Castello
- Rastro Manacor: Saturday mornings, solid country furniture
Online Marketplaces
- Wallapop: The dominant Spanish marketplace, very active Mallorca community
- Vibbo / Milanuncios: Classic classified ad portals
- Facebook Marketplace and groups: "Mallorca Second Hand", "Verkaufen auf Mallorca"
- eBay Kleinanzeigen (Germany): German residents often sell here
- Rebel Rebel, Rastro Benjamin, Vintage Palma: Curated vintage shops
Tips for Bargain Hunting
- Get to markets early - the best pieces are usually gone by 9 am
- Arrange your own transport; delivery is usually the buyer's responsibility for second-hand
- Inspect carefully before buying: woodworm in timber furniture, residues in upholstered pieces, mould on fabric
- Negotiate: 20 to 40 percent off the asking price is normal
Caution: Woodworm is common on Mallorca
Old Mallorcan timber furniture is often affected by woodworm. Small holes, fine dust beneath them, and a hollow sound when you knock are warning signs. Professional heat treatment costs 100 to 400 EUR per piece.
Online Shopping and Delivery
Online furniture shopping on Mallorca works almost like on the mainland, but with a few quirks. Some retailers do not deliver here, or only at extra cost, and returns can be awkward.
Retailers with Good Mallorca Experience
- Amazon.es: Island delivery usually free with Prime. Large items via partner freight companies.
- El Corte Ingles: Good island logistics, assembly can be added on.
- Made.com / Home24: Delivery usually 80 to 200 EUR, lead times often 2 to 6 weeks.
- Bonanza Mallorca: Online retailer focused on island delivery.
What to Watch Out For
- Check at the time of ordering whether "envio a Baleares" (delivery to the Balearics) is free or extra
- Two-stage delivery: container to the port, then lorry to your door
- Returns for large items are often complicated - check the surcharges
- Deadlines: if something arrives damaged, photograph it immediately and report in writing
Importing from Germany
Germany remains an attractive source of furniture, especially for high-quality or specialist pieces. Freight companies specialising in the Mallorca route include Palibex, Balearia Frachten, and smaller German operators such as Umzug24 or removal firms from Stuttgart, Munich and Frankfurt.
Duty-free on relocation: If you import your household goods within twelve months of officially changing your residence (empadronamiento plus residencia), you can bring them in duty-free. The conditions: the furniture must have been in your ownership for at least six months, you must genuinely be relocating, and you must file the Modelo "Regimen de traslado de residencia".
Anyone who imports years later pays 21 percent IVA plus any import turnover tax.
Disposing of Old Furniture
An often-overlooked aspect. At your next renovation or when you move home, you will want to get rid of old furniture - and on Mallorca you cannot simply leave it on the street.
Collection by the Municipality
In Palma, Emaya offers bulky waste collection. Here is how it works:
- Call 971 771 100 or register via the online form at emaya.es
- Agree a collection date - usually within a week
- Put the furniture out at the agreed spot the evening before (typically in front of your door)
- Maximum 2 m3 per collection - split larger volumes into multiple bookings
Other municipalities have similar services; phone numbers are on the Ayuntamiento website. You can find more about waste and utilities in the article Setting Up Utilities.
Punto Verde / Deixalleria
For electronic waste, paint residues, rubble and large volumes of bulky waste, every larger municipality has a Punto Verde (Catalan: Deixalleria). You can drop off for free if you are registered in the municipality. Bring your DNI / NIE and, if asked, proof of your empadronamiento (registration of residence).
Passing On Rather Than Throwing Away
- Caritas Mallorca and Traperos de Emaus: Accept working furniture, often with collection
- Facebook groups "Zu verschenken Mallorca": Quick way to pass things on
- German school and kindergartens: Often accept children's furniture
- Ask your neighbours: Word of mouth works very well in rural areas
Passing on furniture thoughtfully saves you the hassle of collection and does something useful at the same time.
Cost of Professional Clearance
For a complete property clearance (for example after an inheritance), a specialist service costs between 15 and 40 EUR per m3 of volume plus landfill fees. An 80 m2 flat typically comes to 800 to 1,800 EUR.
Furnishing your home on Mallorca well is a mix of pragmatism, budget awareness and local know-how. Using IKEA as a base, combining it with second-hand finds, and thinking about disposal routes from the start means you will be living in a home that works for you within a few months.
