Finding a Doctor on Mallorca - GP, Specialists and German-speaking Doctors

Updated: March 20266 min reading time

Summary

A practical guide to finding a doctor on Mallorca: how to register with a GP, get referrals to specialists, track down German-speaking doctors, and book appointments online.

The Spanish healthcare system works differently from Germany's. There is a GP gatekeeper, long waiting times in the public system, but also high quality. This guide helps you find a good doctor.

Understanding the Spanish healthcare system

Spain's healthcare system follows the GP model: your GP is the point of contact for everything. They refer you to specialists.

The structure:

GP (Medico de Cabecera)
    ↓
Specialist (Cardiologo, Dermatologo, etc.)
    ↓
Hospital if necessary

What that means:

  • You cannot simply go to a cardiologist
  • Your GP must refer you
  • With private insurance: you can go directly to a specialist
  • With public insurance: you need the referral

Public vs. private at a glance:

GP (Medico de Cabecera) - your gatekeeper

Your GP is your first contact for everything: colds, blood-pressure checks, injuries, and as the gatekeeper to specialists.

How to get a GP:

Step 1: Empadronamiento

  • You must be registered (registered at the Ayuntamiento)

Step 2: Visit the Centro de Salud

  • Go to the nearest "Centro de Salud" (health centre)
  • Find the address online: "Centro de Salud [your district] Palma"
  • Bring: passport, empadronamiento certificate, NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero)

Step 3: Automatic assignment

  • The Centro de Salud assigns you an available GP
  • You cannot always choose (depends on availability)
  • You receive an appointment

Step 4: First consultation

  • Your GP creates a patient file
  • They ask about your health
  • You receive an appointment code/number for future visits

Which staff you will find:

A Centro de Salud has:

  • Medico de Familia (GP, specialised in family medicine)
  • Enfermero/a (nurse, for simple things like vaccinations and blood pressure)
  • Matrona (midwife, for women's health and pregnancy)
  • Auxiliar de enfermeria (nursing assistant, for administrative tasks)

Tip

If your GP is not a good fit, you can change. Simply ask at the Centro de Salud: "Quisiera cambiar de medico" (I would like to change my doctor). Normally you can switch after 3 months.

How to make an appointment:

  1. By phone: call the Centro de Salud (number on Google Maps)

    • Opening hours: usually 8:00-20:00
    • Say: "Quiero una cita con mi medico de cabecera" (I would like an appointment with my GP)
    • Wait 2-4 weeks
  2. Online: many centres have online portals

    • Example: PAD (Portal de Administracion de Salud)
    • Log in with your NIE/ID number
    • Book an appointment yourself
  3. In person: go to the Centro de Salud

    • Take a queue number
    • Ask at the desk
    • Sometimes you get an immediate appointment if you are lucky

Specialists and specialist referrals

If you need to see a specialist, you need a referral from your GP.

Common specialists:

  • Cardiologo - cardiologist (heart)
  • Dermatologo - dermatologist (skin)
  • Oftalmologo - ophthalmologist (eyes)
  • Otorrinolaringologo (ORL) - ENT specialist
  • Neurologo - neurologist (nerves)
  • Psicologo/Psiquiatra - psychologist/psychiatrist
  • Endocrinologo - endocrinologist (hormones, diabetes)
  • Urologo - urologist
  • Ginecologo - gynaecologist
  • Traumatologo - orthopaedic surgeon (bones, injuries)

How to get to a specialist:

  1. GP appointment - explain your symptoms
  2. Request a referral - your GP writes: "Derivacion al especialista"
  3. Waiting time - 2-4 weeks (public) or 1-2 days (private)
  4. Specialist appointment - you receive an appointment by post or SMS

Example process: seeing a dermatologist

Week 1:

  • You have a rash, book an appointment with your GP
  • GP examines you
  • Says: "That needs a dermatologist"
  • Writes a referral

Weeks 2-3:

  • You wait for an appointment letter/SMS
  • Appointment is assigned

Weeks 4-5:

  • You go to the dermatologist
  • They diagnose and treat

Tip: If the waiting time is too long or you have private insurance, you can also go directly to a private specialist (without a referral).

Centro de Salud vs. private clinic

Centro de Salud (public):

  • Free (apart from small co-payments)
  • Long waiting times
  • Good quality
  • Often with older facilities
  • Standard treatment

Private clinic/Consulta Privada (private):

  • 50-150 EUR per visit
  • Short waiting times
  • Often more comfortable and modern
  • Newer technology
  • Specialised and faster

Centres in Palma:

Public (Centro de Salud):

  • Centro de Salud Campus Llarg
  • Centro de Salud Sindical
  • Centro de Salud Ballester
  • (Search: "Centro de Salud + district Palma")

Private (popular clinics):

  • Clinica Juaneda (Palma, Manacor) - well-known, modern
  • Clinica Rotger (Palma) - high quality
  • Policlinica Miramar (Palma) - specialised
  • Teknon (Palma) - large network
  • Quironsalud (Palma) - chain with good specialists

Warning

Never go to a private clinic as your first port of call unless necessary. The costs add up quickly. Use the public system for routine matters; go private only when needed.

German-speaking doctors on Mallorca

Many Germans, Austrians and Swiss on Mallorca want a German-speaking doctor.

The reality:

  • There are only a few fully German-speaking doctors
  • But: many doctors speak good English
  • English gets you by almost everywhere

German-speaking doctors/clinics (where available):

    • It is enough for basic medical terms
  2. Write notes

    • Write down your symptoms (in German or English)
    • Show the doctor your notes
    • Drawings can help!
  3. Bring Google Translate

    • Phone with offline translation installed
    • For more complicated questions
  4. Bring a friend

    • If your Spanish is not enough, bring someone along
    • The doctor will be patient

Tips for communicating with your doctor

If your Spanish is not perfect:

Preparation:

  • Write down your symptoms
  • Note: when did it start? How often? What makes it worse?
  • Example: "Headache for 3 days. Worse in the morning. Ibuprofen not helping."

In the consulting room:

  • "Excuse me, my Spanish is not perfect. Can we speak slowly?"
  • "Perdon, mi espanol no es perfecto. Podemos hablar lentamente?"

Useful phrases:

  • "Me duele..." - It hurts...
  • "Tengo fiebre" - I have a fever
  • "No puedo..." - I cannot...
  • "Que medicamento?" - Which medication?
  • "Cuantas veces al dia?" - How many times a day?
  • "Efectos secundarios?" - Side effects?

After the visit:

  • "Necesito volver?" - Do I need to come back?
  • "Cuando puedo volver?" - When can I come back?
  • Ask for a written invoice/diagnosis (if private)

Tip

Doctors on Mallorca are usually patient with language barriers. They know that many expats are there. Showing a little effort and being polite goes a long way. A few medical terms in Spanish can be very helpful.

Summary:

  1. Register at the Ayuntamiento (empadronamiento)
  2. Go to the Centro de Salud and get a GP assigned
  3. Book appointments online via PAD or by phone
  4. Your GP refers you to specialists when needed
  5. English/Google Translate helps with language barriers
  6. Private clinics are faster but more expensive - only when necessary

You can do this!
