Entry with Dogs and Cats
The good news: it is legal and relatively straightforward to bring your pet to Mallorca. Dogs and cats are well regulated within the EU, and Spain has modern animal welfare provisions.
Entry is handled via the EU pet passport (also known as the pet travel document). The best way to travel with a pet is via Palma Airport or by ferry from the mainland. This is a small booklet containing all the key information: the animal's name, breed, sex, colour, date of birth, microchip number, rabies vaccination and other vaccinations.
You need the passport by the time you arrive at the latest. The best preparation is to apply for it 4 to 6 weeks before your trip. Your vet can issue it.
Requirements and Documentation
To travel to Mallorca with your pet, you need:
1. EU pet passport Apply for the passport from your vet. It is accepted across Europe. The document is valid for life and contains all your animal's medical information.
2. Microchip Your dog or cat must have a microchip (ISO standard 11784/11785). The chip is inserted under the skin (painless, like an injection). The number is recorded in the EU pet passport. If your animal already has a chip, you are good to go. If not, ask your vet to fit one (costs around 30 to 50 EUR).
3. Rabies vaccination The rabies vaccination is compulsory. It must be given at least 21 days before departure. The vaccine protects for 3 years (depending on the vaccine used). The vaccination is documented in the EU pet passport. You need the original certificate when you travel.
4. Rabies antibody blood test (in some cases) Some countries require a blood test to confirm that the vaccination is effective. Spain does not require this as a routine measure, but it provides an extra layer of protection. The test costs around 50 to 100 EUR and is carried out by a laboratory.
5. Other vaccinations (optional) Vaccines are available for leptospirosis, kennel cough and cat diseases. These are not compulsory in Spain but are recommended. Your vet can advise.
6. Worming and flea treatment (optional) It is recommended that you worm your pet and treat it for fleas 4 to 6 weeks before travel. On Mallorca, parasites are active year-round.
Vets and Animal Hospitals
There are good vets and animal clinics on Mallorca. Most are private, but the standard is high.
German-speaking vets:
- Dr. Rolf Schmidt - Palma, Calle 14 de Abril. Specialist in dogs and cats.
- Clinica Veterinaria Jaime Jaume - Palma, large network with several branches.
- Vetcesar - Palma and other locations, well regarded.
Costs are similar to Germany:
- Consultation: 50 to 100 EUR
- Vaccinations: 30 to 50 EUR per vaccination
- Dental cleaning: 200 to 400 EUR
- Surgical procedures: 300 to 1,000 EUR+ (depending on complexity)
Emergency vets: There are 24-hour emergency vets in Palma and larger towns. Prices are higher (50% surcharge), but it is important to have the number to hand.
Animal hospitals: For serious cases there are animal hospitals such as Clinica Veterinaria Jaime Jaume with operating theatres and intensive care.
Dog Beaches and Activities
Mallorca is dog-friendly, but there are rules.
Dog beaches:
- Cala Pi - Permitted dog beach, showers available
- Playa de Muro - Partly dog-friendly (off-season)
- Cala Blanca - Small cove, often dog-friendly
- Cala Mondrago - Nature reserve, restricted access
Most public beaches ban dogs from June to September (high season). In the off-season (October to April) dogs are often allowed if kept on a lead.
Dog-friendly activities:
- Hiking: Many hiking trails are dog-friendly. Bring plenty of water.
- Cycling: Dogs can run alongside a bike (on a lead).
- Cafes and restaurants: Many have outdoor areas where dogs are welcome.
- Dog parks: There are a few dog parks in Palma where dogs can run off the lead.
Dog training: There are dog trainers on Mallorca, many of them German. Courses cost around 30 to 50 EUR.
Insurance and Ongoing Costs
Pet health insurance is optional but recommended. Costs on Mallorca can add up quickly, and insurance helps.
Pet health insurance:
- Basic: 150 to 250 EUR per year (accidents and illness)
- Premium: 300 to 500 EUR per year (more comprehensive)
German insurers such as ERGO or Allianz accept vets on Mallorca. Spanish insurers are cheaper but operate in Spanish.
Ongoing costs (monthly):
- Food: 50 to 100 EUR (depending on size and quality)
- Vaccinations / medication: 10 to 20 EUR (spread over the year)
- Dental cleaning / preventive care: 15 to 30 EUR (spread out)
- Insurance: 15 to 40 EUR (if taken out)
- Total: around 90 to 190 EUR per month
This is similar to Germany, sometimes cheaper.
Tips and Special Considerations
Registration: After your empadronamiento (local registration), many municipalities also require you to register your dog (Registro de Animales). This is free or very cheap (5 to 10 EUR) and generates a local dog registration card.
Dog taxes: There are dog taxes depending on the municipality (10 to 50 EUR per year). This is low compared to Germany.
Free roaming: Cats should not be left to roam freely. This is a safety risk (cars, predators). Many expats build a cat enclosure (cat net) or keep the cat indoors.
Parasites: Fleas and ticks are active year-round on Mallorca. Use flea treatment monthly (spot-on, tablets or collars). Costs: 10 to 20 EUR per month.
Heat: In summer (June to August) it is very hot (35°C+). Dogs should be walked in the early morning or in the evening. Always provide enough water and shade.
Jellyfish: In summer there are sometimes jellyfish in the water. Do not let your dog into the water if jellyfish are visible.
Local wildlife: There are snakes (non-venomous), spiders, scorpions (rare) and stray dogs (becoming rarer) on Mallorca. Keep an eye on your pet, especially at night.
Summary
Moving to Mallorca with your dog or cat is very possible and is well accepted by the locals. The bureaucratic effort is minimal (EU pet passport, vaccinations), and veterinary care is good. The island is dog-friendly with beaches, hiking trails and a good community of pet owners. Make the most of your new home and the natural surroundings with your pet. It will be a great experience.
