Out-of-hours veterinary care on Mallorca works differently from what you may be used to at home. Not every practice runs an on-call service, and the clinics with genuine 24-hour operation are spread across the island. This post shows you where to find help around the clock, what it costs and how to prepare before the emergency happens.

The emergency vet service (veterinario de urgencias) is out-of-hours care for animals. On Mallorca it comes in two forms: clinics with permanent 24-hour operation every day of the year, and smaller practices that rotate the on-call duty between them.
Definition: An emergency vet on Mallorca is a veterinary facility that provides initial medical care for pets outside regular opening hours, at night, at weekends and on public holidays. Not every practice offers this permanently; responsibility rotates by region and week.
One important difference from many other European countries: Spain has no statutory obligation to provide emergency veterinary care. The structures that exist have grown voluntarily, through associations of practices and through the Col·legi Oficial de Veterinaris de les Illes Balears (COLVIB), the official professional body for vets in the Balearics. 24-hour animal clinics on Mallorca
A few facilities on Mallorca are reliably reachable around the clock.
VeterClinic Son Servera in the east of the island is the best-known dedicated 24-hour animal clinic on Mallorca. For residents around Cala Ratjada, Artà and Manacor it is the first port of call in an emergency. Alongside emergency care it offers surgery, intensive care and modern diagnostics. Palma has several clinics with extended emergency hours, among them the Clínica Veterinaria Foners. For residents in and around Palma it is the closest option at weekends and on public holidays.
One rule matters more than any list: always call before you drive off. Even clinics that normally run 24 hours can be short-staffed and limited. A quick phone call saves time and stress when it counts.
On-call services by region
Outside the large clinics, practices rotate the on-call duty by region. Your regular vet knows the current rota and will give you the right number if you ask. Here is a rough regional picture:
- Palma and surroundings: several clinics with emergency cover, some 24 hours
- North (Pollença, Alcudia, Sa Pobla): duty rotates between local practices
- East (Cala Ratjada, Artà, Manacor): VeterClinic Son Servera as the main option
- Southwest (Calvià, Andratx): Palma clinics are usually nearest
- Tramuntana and Sóller: practices in Palma take the on-call duty

What does an emergency vet visit cost?
How much does an out-of-hours vet visit cost on Mallorca? An emergency appointment outside normal consultation hours is considerably more expensive than a routine visit. The initial consultation alone (consulta de urgencias) runs from 80 to 150 EUR. On top of that come treatment, medication and, if needed, diagnostics such as X-rays or blood work. An estimated 100,000 registered dogs and cats live on Mallorca, so veterinary services here are professionally organised, but not cheap.

Pet insurance is still uncommon among foreign residents on Mallorca, but it can pay off, especially for younger animals or breeds with known health problems. Spanish providers such as Sanitas Animales or Mapfre Mascotas offer policies for pets registered in Spain.
Preparation is the best emergency strategy
A well-prepared owner gets to the right help faster. Keep these documents and items within reach:
- European pet passport (Pasaporte Europeo de Mascota)
- Proof of rabies vaccination and current vaccinations
- Your animal's microchip number (mandatory for dogs in the Balearics)
- The emergency clinic's number on paper, not only in your phone

Pine processionary caterpillars are life-threatening for dogs
The pine processionary caterpillar (procesionaria del pino) is active on Mallorca from January to April and is a serious danger to dogs. If a dog touches the caterpillars with its tongue, life-threatening inflammation can set in within minutes. Symptoms: heavy drooling, swollen tongue, difficulty breathing. Drive to the nearest animal clinic immediately, without losing time.
