If you bring a foreign-registered car to Mallorca, sooner or later you have to put it on Spanish plates. The place that handles this is the Jefatura Provincial de Trafico, the vehicle registration office on Mallorca. What sounds like a single trip to a government counter is in practice spread across several stops and steps. What is the Jefatura de Trafico?

The Jefatura Provincial de Trafico is the Spanish vehicle registration office and a regional branch of the national traffic authority DGT (Direccion General de Trafico). It is responsible for registering vehicles, issuing Spanish number plates, exchanging driving licences and every other vehicle matter. Mallorca has exactly one Jefatura, and it sits in Palma.

The address is Carrer de Margalida Caimari 58, 07004 Palma de Mallorca. The building is in the Son Roca district and is easy to reach by car. There is parking nearby, but it fills up quickly.

How to book an appointment

You book appointments at the Jefatura de Trafico exclusively online through the official DGT portal. Go to sede.dgt.gob.es and pick the service you need under "Cita Previa". For registering a foreign vehicle for the first time, that is usually "Matriculacion de vehiculos".

To book you need your NIE number and a working email address. After booking you get a confirmation with the date, the time and a reference number that you have to bring to the appointment.

What you have to do before the appointment

This is the part people underestimate: the Jefatura de Trafico is the last step, not the first. Two things have to happen before it, in the right order.

Step 1: pass the ITV

Registration carries a state fee (tasa). You pay it through the DGT portal before your appointment. Registering a foreign vehicle falls under tasa 04.1, which varies by vehicle type and engine size. Budget roughly 90 to 120 EUR for it.

Which documents to bring to the registration office

You have to turn up fully prepared. A missing document means a new appointment. Here is what you need:

• Valid passport or Spanish ID card (original plus a copy)
• NIE number (proof of it)
• Empadronamiento certificate (proof of residence in Spain)
• Vehicle registration documents from your home country (original plus a certified translation)

How long does registration take from start to finish? Including the ITV appointment, the tasa payment and the appointment at the Jefatura de Trafico, the whole process usually takes two to four weeks. In peak season it can take longer because appointments are scarcer.

Can I keep driving on foreign plates while registration is under way? This is a grey area. Officially you have to register the vehicle within 30 days of establishing residence in Spain. Plenty of residents drive on foreign plates for longer, but they risk a fine if they are stopped.
