Private Hospitals on Mallorca: Rotger, Juaneda, Quirónsalud

If you are new to Mallorca and get seriously ill for the first time, you run into a question that rarely comes up back home: public or private, and if private, which hospital? For many residents with a private policy, a private hospital on Mallorca is the normal route to a specialist, and the choice is manageable. Two groups essentially share the market on the island: Juaneda and Quirónsalud, the latter with the Hospital Palmaplanas and the Clínica Rotger. This post maps out the hospitals, gives self-pay prices, and explains when you are better off at the public Son Espases even with private insurance. A private hospital is a hospital under private ownership that bills patients or their insurers directly and is not part of the public health service, IB-Salut. Treatment there requires a private health policy that has a contract with the hospital, or payment out of pocket.

The big private hospital groups on Mallorca

Juaneda is the older of the two groups. Founded in 1917, the company now runs five hospitals in the Balearics by its own count, plus more than 40 other centres, from a specialist practice in Inca to the small stations in Alcúdia or Cala Ratjada that mainly treat tourists in summer. On Mallorca, that means Clínica Juaneda in central Palma, Juaneda Hospital Miramar on Camí de la Vileta, the group's largest hospital, and Juaneda Hospital Muro in the north. There is a dedicated line for callers from abroad, +34 971 222 222. Appointments run through +34 971 280 000 or the group's online booking portal.

Quirónsalud is Spain's largest private hospital operator and has two hospitals on Mallorca. Hospital Quirónsalud Palmaplanas sits at Camí dels Reis 308, right on the Vía de Cintura ring road, so it is easy to reach from the southwest and the island's interior. Clínica Rotger, running since 1944 and part of Quirónsalud for several years now, occupies a historic building at Vía Roma 3 in the city centre. Its emergency entrance is at Calle Santiago Rusiñol 11. Both hospitals share departments and doctors, and access runs through the same patient platform. A special case is Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Palma, running since 1955. It belongs to the Brothers Hospitallers order, works mostly under contract for IB-Salut, but also accepts private and insured patients. Anyone treated there is formally in a semi-private hospital, not a classic private one.

Emergency rooms, languages and appointments

Rotger, Palmaplanas and Juaneda Miramar all run emergency rooms open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Clínica Rotger is the only private ER in the city centre and covers general medicine, trauma and paediatrics; radiology and the lab are staffed overnight. Palmaplanas also has its own paediatric emergency room. At Juaneda, emergencies in Palma go through Hospital Miramar; for the northern half of the island there is the hospital in Muro.

Language is well covered at all the hospitals. Rotger says it keeps multilingual staff on hand around the clock for international patients, and Juaneda has its own interpreter service. Both groups have doctors who speak German, English and other languages, but not in every department. Appointments are available online with both groups, usually within a few days. Bring your insurance card, ID and, with some insurers, a prior authorization to your first visit, or you will be treated as a self-pay patient and have to claim the money back from your insurer afterward.

What self-pay patients pay

Neither group publishes a full price list for Mallorca. Quirónsalud does sell individual services nationwide through its online portal e-Quirónsalud, and those prices serve as a guide for Palma too. Juaneda quotes fixed rates for its home-visit service. The figures in the table below come from these two sources (as of August 2026) and are indicative, not a quote.

There is no published price for the full-day preventive check-up both groups offer. Quirónsalud's programme covers blood and urine analysis, an internist consultation, ECG with stress test, chest X-ray, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, audiometry, an eye exam, spirometry and a carotid Doppler. Adding up these items from the online price list gets you into several hundred euros before imaging like an MRI or a colonoscopy is even added. Ask for a written quote first. Rotger explicitly offers this to uninsured patients, and it costs nothing.

Which insurers settle directly

Both groups work with practically every Spanish health insurer. Juaneda lists Adeslas, Asisa, Axa, Caser, Cigna, DKV, Generali, Mapfre and Sanitas among others; Rotger names all national and international health and travel insurers. What matters is not the group but the individual doctor: an insurer may list the hospital in its network without covering every specialist inside it. With a foreign private health policy or travel health insurance, you will usually be treated as a self-pay patient: you pay on the spot, submit the invoice, and get reimbursed. For inpatient stays, many insurers arrange direct billing with the hospital once they have pre-approved it. Clarify that before a planned operation, not after.

Your rights as a patient apply in both worlds, by the way. The Balearic health authority states in its overview of patient rights and duties that they are enforceable equally in public and private centres: information in plain language, spoken and written, about diagnosis, alternatives and risks. This rests on the Spanish Law 41/2002 on patient autonomy, which also gives you the right to a copy of your medical record. That applies at a private hospital too, and it is worth using if you ever switch providers.

When Son Espases is the better address

Hospital Universitari Son Espases in Palma is the Balearics' reference hospital for the most complex cases. Heart attack, stroke, serious traffic accidents, burns and complicated births all get routed there, because the private hospitals do not keep the teams or the round-the-clock infrastructure for these cases. In practice, private emergency rooms transfer such patients themselves, to Son Espases or to Son Llàtzer.

That is why the rule is: in a life-threatening emergency, call 061 (the Balearic emergency medical service) or the Europe-wide 112, whatever your insurance situation. The ambulance takes you to the nearest suitable hospital, and that will almost always be a public one. For everything else, the waiting lists are worth a look. IB-Salut publishes them monthly in a public waiting list viewer, last updated on 3 September 2026. In July 2026, the average wait for a first specialist appointment was 65.2 days. If you need a cardiologist or a dermatologist, you can be seen privately within a week. If you are facing complex cancer treatment, the oncology department at Son Espases is often the better choice than any private room, even if the waiting room is fuller.

Can I still go to Son Espases if I have private insurance? Yes, always in an emergency. For planned treatment, you need a Tarjeta Sanitaria and a referral from your public GP. If you only have private insurance and no Tarjeta, you will be referred to the private hospitals for elective procedures.

Bottom line

For residents with a Spanish private policy, the choice between Juaneda and Quirónsalud usually comes down to the department you need and where you live: Rotger is central, Palmaplanas sits well on the ring road, Miramar is in the west of the city, and Muro serves the north. As a self-pay patient, expect 70 to 100 EUR per specialist visit and ask for a written quote before anything bigger. For anything genuinely dangerous, call 061 and get taken to Son Espases.
