If you are moving to Mallorca or spending an extended stretch on the island, you need reliable internet and a mobile plan that fits. The good news: internet on Mallorca has improved a lot in recent years. Fiber is available in many areas, the mobile networks are well built out, and prices are often lower than in much of northern Europe. In this article you will learn everything about providers, plans, and what to look for when choosing.
Fiber on Mallorca - fast internet for your home
Spain is among the European countries with the best fiber coverage. Around Palma and in the larger towns on the island, several providers offer fiber connections (fibra óptica) with speeds from 100 to 1,000 Mbit/s. That is often faster and cheaper than comparable connections back home.
The main landline and fiber providers on Mallorca are:
- Movistar - Spain's largest provider with the best fiber network. Offers bundles with TV and mobile from around 35 euros a month.
- Vodafone España - similarly good coverage, with regular promotional deals for new customers.
- Orange - affordable plans from around 30 euros, good network quality in urban areas.
- MásMóvil / Yoigo - the value winner with fiber from about 25 euros a month.
- Digi - the cheapest provider, available mainly in urban areas, with fiber from around 20 euros.
To sign a contract you need your NIE number and a Spanish bank account (IBAN). Most providers have shops in Palma and the larger towns. Installation usually takes one to two weeks after the contract is signed.
Tip: check availability first
Before you sign a contract, check on the providers websites whether fiber is available at your address. In the countryside or in older fincas there is sometimes only DSL or mobile as an alternative. The page cobertura.orange.es quickly shows you what is possible at your address.
Mobile in Spain - providers and plans
The mobile network on Mallorca is very well developed overall. 4G is available island-wide and 5G is spreading quickly in and around Palma. You can choose between contract plans and prepaid options.
The big network operators are Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange. Alongside them are numerous low-cost mobile providers (MVNOs) that use their networks:
- Simyo - uses the Orange network, plans from 5 euros a month with data and calls.
- Lycamobile - good for international calls, prepaid with no contract commitment.
- Digi - very cheap flat-rate plans from around 10 euros with lots of data.
- Pepephone - popular for good customer service and fair prices on the Movistar network.
- Lowi - Vodafone network, simple and transparent plans from 8 euros.
A typical mobile plan with 20 GB of data and unlimited calls costs between 8 and 15 euros a month. Comparable plans often cost twice as much elsewhere in Europe.
Prepaid on Mallorca - flexible with no contract
If you do not have a fixed address yet or want to stay flexible, a prepaid SIM is the best choice. You can buy prepaid cards at any phone shop, in many supermarkets, and in tobacco shops (estancos).
Since 2017 you have to register with an ID document when you activate the card. Your passport or national ID card is enough. The card is usually active within a few hours.
Good prepaid options to start with:
- Orange Prepago - from 10 euros for 20 GB and calls, valid for 4 weeks
- Vodafone Yu - prepaid plans aimed at younger users with plenty of data
- Lycamobile - no base fee, top up your balance as needed
- Digi Prepago - very cheap data packages, ideal for short stays
Watch out: EU roaming is not a permanent solution
Thanks to EU roaming, a SIM card from another EU country works on Mallorca, but only for temporary stays. If you use it abroad permanently, your provider can add a surcharge after about four months or block the card. For long stays a Spanish plan is the way to go.
WiFi on Mallorca - public and on the go
You will find public WiFi on Mallorca in most cafés, restaurants, and shopping centers. The city of Palma also offers free WiFi in a few public squares. The quality varies a lot, though. For fast and reliable internet on the go you are better served with a good mobile plan.
Anyone who regularly uses public WiFi should consider a VPN service. Open networks are a popular target for data theft. A VPN encrypts your connection and protects your personal data, whether you are working in a café or browsing on the beach.
For remote workers and digital nomads, the coworking spaces in Palma offer stable high-speed internet in a professional setting. Most have fiber connections and backup lines.
Internet in the countryside and in fincas
While coverage in and around Palma is excellent, the picture in the countryside is sometimes different. Remote fincas often have no fiber and sometimes not even DSL. Here are the main alternatives:
- 4G/5G routers - providers like Movistar and Vodafone offer mobile routers with a data flat rate. Speeds range from 30 to 100 Mbit/s, depending on reception.
- WiMAX / fixed wireless - local providers such as IbetaTv or MallorcaWifi serve rural areas with internet over a radio link.
- Starlink - SpaceX's satellite internet solution is available on Mallorca and delivers 50 to 200 Mbit/s. The cost is around 40 euros a month plus the purchase of the antenna.

Tip: ask the neighbors
The best source of information about internet options in the countryside is often the neighbors. They know which provider actually works and what experiences others in the area have had. Local expat community Facebook groups for Mallorca can be helpful too.
Conclusion
Internet on Mallorca is reliable, fast, and cheaper than in much of Europe in most areas. In Palma and the coastal towns you can easily get fiber with high speeds. For mobile, low-cost providers like Digi, Simyo, or Lowi offer great plans from under 10 euros. If you have just arrived on the island, start with a prepaid SIM and switch to a contract plan later, once you have your NIE and a Spanish bank account. That way you stay connected from day one and never miss a thing.
