Mobile Internet on Mallorca: SIM Cards and Data Plans

If your SIM is from the EU or the EEA, you use mobile data in Mallorca at your home price thanks to EU roaming, and since January 2026 the same applies to SIM cards from Ukraine and Moldova. SIM cards from the UK, the US, Switzerland and most other non-EU countries are not covered: your provider sets the price, so check its roaming rates or use a travel eSIM. If you live on the island, a Spanish SIM is usually the cheaper option: unlimited data costs 10 EUR a month with Digi, and prepaid plans from Movistar, Orange and Vodafone with 60 to 90 GB cost 10 EUR for 28 days.

Do I Really Need a Spanish SIM Card?

If your SIM is from another EU or EEA country, it works on Mallorca without extra charges thanks to EU roaming. Since 2017 the rule across the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway has been: you pay the same price abroad as at home. Since January 2026 it also applies in Ukraine and Moldova. The EU Roaming Regulation (EU) 2022/612 has extended this rule until 2032. On unlimited or very cheap data plans, though, your provider may set a fair use data limit abroad. The official EU page on roaming costs also explains: if over four months you spend more time abroad than at home and use more data abroad than at home, your provider can contact you and give you 14 days to explain your situation. If nothing changes after that, it may add a surcharge.

In practice this means: as a holidaymaker or for short stays, an EU SIM from home is perfectly fine. As a resident, or for a stay of more than three months, a Spanish SIM is worth it.

Not on an EU SIM? UK, US, Swiss and Other Plans

The EU roaming rules protect SIM cards issued in the EU and EEA, and since January 2026 also SIM cards from Ukraine and Moldova. As the European Commission points out, they stopped applying to the UK after Brexit. If your SIM comes from the UK, the US, Switzerland or most other countries outside the EU and EEA, your own provider decides what roaming in Spain costs. Some plans include Spain, others charge a daily fee or bill per megabyte.

Check your provider's roaming page or app before you fly, and switch off data roaming on your phone if you are not sure. For stays of a few weeks or longer, a Spanish prepaid SIM or a travel eSIM is usually cheaper than paying roaming fees.

eSIM for Short Visits

A travel eSIM is a data plan you buy online and install on your phone by scanning a QR code, often before you leave home. It is a practical choice for short visits, especially on a non-EU SIM: on a dual-SIM phone you can keep your own SIM installed with data roaming switched off and use the eSIM for data. Your phone has to support eSIM and must not be locked to your home provider. Most travel eSIMs are data only and come without a Spanish phone number.

If you want a Spanish number, some Spanish operators sell their prepaid plans as an eSIM too, Vodafone for example. You still register it with your passport or ID card, as with a physical SIM.

The Main Mobile Providers on Mallorca

Spain has a highly competitive mobile market. The big network operators are Movistar (Telefónica), Vodafone and MasOrange, which includes Orange, Yoigo and MásMóvil. Digi is building its own network and also uses Movistar's. Alongside them there are many virtual operators (MVNOs) that use the same networks but sell considerably cheaper.

For residents on Mallorca, these providers are especially relevant (prices as of September 2026):

• Movistar - Spain's largest network with the best area coverage, especially in the Serra de Tramuntana and rural areas. Prepaid with 60 GB for 10 EUR (28 days).
• Vodafone España - Good coverage in Palma and tourist zones, somewhat weaker inland. Prepaid with 90 GB for 10 EUR (28 days), frequent promotional offers for new customers.
• Orange - Solid coverage, prepaid with 60 GB for 10 EUR (28 days).
• Digi Mobile - Unlimited data and calls for 10 EUR a month with no minimum term, 8 EUR with Digi fibre. Smaller packages start at 3 EUR a month.
• Lebara - Prepaid with cheap options for international calls.

Prepaid SIM Cards: Getting Started Without a Contract

A prepaid SIM card (tarjeta SIM de prepago) is a Spanish mobile card without a contract commitment. You top it up with credit and use it flexibly, ideal for newcomers who do not want to sign a contract right away. With Movistar, Orange and Vodafone a prepaid plan runs for 28 days and renews as long as you have enough credit.

Where do you buy a prepaid SIM on Mallorca?

• Orange, Movistar and Vodafone stores in Palma, Inca, Manacor and other larger towns
• Digi points of sale for a Digi prepaid SIM
• Local phone shops (tiendas de telefonía) in almost every town
• Online from the providers, Vodafone for example also sells its prepaid plans as an eSIM

What do you need to register?

Since 2007, every prepaid SIM in Spain has to be registered in the buyer's name at the time of purchase (Ley 25/2007). For this you need your passport or national ID card. A NIE number is handy but not strictly required.

Registration happens when you buy the SIM in a store or order it online.

Network Coverage on Mallorca

The Spanish regulator CNMC regularly publishes network coverage data. According to its latest reports, 4G/LTE reaches over 97 percent of the Spanish population - one of the highest figures in Europe. On Mallorca this applies above all to urban areas and the coast.

In detail, the picture looks like this:

• Palma and surroundings - Excellent coverage from all major providers, with 5G already in some districts
• Tourist centres and the coast - Very good coverage, stable even in high season
• Inland (Inca, Sineu, Petra) - Well covered by Movistar and Orange
• Serra de Tramuntana and remote fincas - Movistar has a clear lead here; other providers have gaps in the mountains

If you live on a remote finca or spend a lot of time in the Tramuntana, prefer Movistar or a provider on the Movistar network, such as Digi, which uses Movistar alongside its own antennas. The providers' coverage maps help you check in advance.
