Freelancing on Mallorca: Registering as Autonomo and the Costs
Sandor Farkas
Mallorca expert and author
Working as a freelancer on Mallorca sounds like a laptop on the beach, but in practice it starts with getting the registration right. Anyone living here permanently and earning money can rarely avoid the autonomo status. This article explains, from a resident's point of view, how you register as an autonomo, what the Seguridad Social really costs in 2026, which business expenses you can deduct, and when it pays to use a gestoria. No marketing promises, just concrete figures and the pitfalls many people only notice after their first tax bill.
At a glance
Freelancers on Mallorca usually register as an autonomo. Registration runs through the Agencia Tributaria (tax) and the Seguridad Social (social security). In 2026, thanks to the Tarifa Plana, you pay only EUR 80 in social contributions per month in the first year. A gestoria takes the bureaucracy off your hands and costs EUR 50 to 120 a month.
Autonomo or Sociedad Limitada: which suits you?
An autonomo is an individual registered as self-employed in Spain who invoices under their own name, pays income tax, and contributes to social security every month. There is no separation between private and business assets, and no minimum capital is required.
For most freelancers on Mallorca the autonomo is the right route, because it is cheap to start and quick to activate. A Sociedad Limitada (SL), the Spanish equivalent of a limited company, only makes sense with higher profits, several partners, or real liability risk. It requires share capital, a notary, and double-entry bookkeeping. Which form is better for tax depends on your profit. For a first orientation, see our guide working as an autonomo in Spain.
Registering as an autonomo on Mallorca: step by step
Registration consists of two separate visits to the authorities, which have to happen in the right order. You can largely do both online today if you have a digital signature (Certificado Digital).
Sort out your NIE and tax residence
Nothing works without an NIE number and a registered address. Both must be in place before you register.
Tax registration (Hacienda)
With Modelo 036, or the shorter Modelo 037, you register your activity with the Agencia Tributaria and choose your activity code (Epigrafe IAE).
Registration with the Seguridad Social
Within 60 days before you start, you register in the RETA, the special scheme for the self-employed. Here you also select the Tarifa Plana.
Set up invoicing and quarterly filings
Put a system in place for invoices, IVA (Modelo 303), and the income-tax advance payment (Modelo 130).
The order matters: Hacienda first, then Seguridad Social. Anyone who forgets social security risks back payments and may lose the right to the Tarifa Plana.
What does an autonomo cost in 2026?
Since 2023 the social contribution has been based on your actual net income (the system of cotizacion por ingresos reales). Newcomers, however, still benefit from the Tarifa Plana. In 2026 the Tarifa Plana is EUR 80 per month for the first twelve months, regardless of income. If your profit stays below the Spanish minimum wage after that, you can extend it for another twelve months.
| Posten | Kosten | Dauer |
|---|---|---|
| Tarifa Plana (year 1) | EUR 80 / month | 12 months |
| Social contribution after the Tarifa Plana | from approx. EUR 230 / month | income-dependent |
| Gestoria (optional) | EUR 50 to 120 / month | ongoing |
| Professional liability insurance (by sector) | EUR 150 to 400 / year | annual |
Caution: the contribution rises sharply after the first year
Many people budget only for the EUR 80 and get a nasty surprise in the second year. Plan for your social contribution to be calculated on actual profit from then on, which can amount to several hundred euros a month.
Deducting business expenses and paying tax
As an autonomo you pay a quarterly advance on income tax (IRPF) and pass on the value-added tax (IVA) you charge your clients. At the end of the year the tax return (Declaracion de la Renta) settles everything. How high your tax rate is depends on whether you count as a tax resident. You will find the basics in our guide tax residency on Mallorca.
Deductible expenses are those clearly connected to your activity. Typical items for freelancers on Mallorca:
- A proportion of rent and utilities if you work from home and the workspace is registered with Hacienda
- Laptop, software, phone, and internet
- Coworking fees and professional literature
- Travel costs and a vehicle used for work (with limitations)
- Contributions to the Seguridad Social and the gestoria's fee
Tip: collect receipts from the start
Keep every invoice digitally and note the business connection. Spanish tax inspectors only accept expenses when a proper factura with your NIF is on file. A simple till receipt is often not enough.
When a gestoria pays off
A gestoria is a Spanish office for administrative and tax matters that handles your quarterly filings, your registration, and communication with the authorities. For EUR 50 to 120 a month you save yourself deadline stress and expensive mistakes. Especially in the first year, when your Spanish is not yet up to bureaucratic jargon, this is a sensible investment. Our guide to the gestoria explains exactly which tasks it covers.
The official bodies you register with are the Seguridad Social and the Agencia Tributaria:
Tesoreria General de la Seguridad Social
Official registration in the RETA and information on the Tarifa Plana.
Agencia Tributaria (Hacienda)
Tax registration via Modelo 036 or 037 and all quarterly filings.
Common questions from freelancers
Do I really have to become an autonomo to freelance on Mallorca?
As soon as you work regularly for payment and have your tax residence on Mallorca, yes. Occasional one-off jobs below the threshold are a grey area, but anyone living here permanently and issuing invoices cannot avoid registering.
Can I work on Mallorca with a business registered in my home country?
Only temporarily. Once you move your centre of life to Spain, you count as taxable here and have to register in the Spanish system. A business registered abroad alone does not protect you from the Spanish social security obligation.
Conclusion
The path to freelancing on Mallorca almost always runs through registering as an autonomo. With the Tarifa Plana of EUR 80 in the first year the start is cheap, but from the second year the social contributions rise noticeably, and tax comes quarterly. Anyone who collects receipts from the start, knows the deadlines, and calls in a gestoria when in doubt saves time and money. Plan the running costs realistically, and self-employment on the island works over the long term too.
