Language Schools on Mallorca - Courses, Costs and Recommendations

Summary

Overview of the best language schools on Mallorca: course formats, costs, locations and what to look out for when choosing one.

Why a language school?

Online courses and apps are convenient, but an in-person language school has clear advantages. You learn in a group, get direct feedback from native speakers and build connections with other expats. Especially on Mallorca, where you can often get by in everyday life with German or English, a language school creates the commitment needed for regular study.

For residents planning to stay on Mallorca long-term, Spanish is not a nice-to-have. Official appointments, doctor's visits, neighbourhood contacts - speaking the language makes life noticeably easier in every area.

The best language schools on Mallorca

Escuela Oficial de Idiomas (EOI)

The state language school in Palma is by far the cheapest option. You pay around 50-100 EUR per school year for regular lessons. Courses run from September to June and follow the Common European Framework of Reference (A1 to C2).

Advantages: Extremely affordable, officially recognised certificates, good teachers. Disadvantages: Long waiting lists, fixed course times (often in the afternoon), large groups (20-25 people), enrolment only in September.

Location: Palma, Carrer d'Arago

Die Akademie

Private language school in Palma with a good reputation in the German-speaking community. Offers group and individual lessons at all levels. Groups are small (4-8 people), which allows for more intensive learning.

International House Palma

Part of the worldwide IH network. Professionally run with experienced, certified teachers. As well as Spanish it offers DELE exam preparation courses. Slightly more expensive, but high quality.

Palma Language School

Smaller school in the centre of Palma with flexible course times. Well suited to working people who want to study in the evenings or at weekends.

Tip: Make use of taster sessions

Most private language schools offer a free taster lesson. Use it to test the atmosphere and teaching style before you commit.

Course formats and levels

Levels according to the CEFR

All reputable language schools on Mallorca align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

A1/A2 (Beginner): Basic communication, simple conversations, shopping, asking for directions. For most everyday situations on Mallorca, A2 is already enough.

B1/B2 (Intermediate): Fluent conversations, dealing with authorities independently, understanding the news. B1 is the level required for a naturalisation application.

C1/C2 (Advanced): Negotiation-level fluency, understanding complex texts, academic Spanish. Useful if you want to study in Spain or work for a Spanish company.

Course formats

Group lessons (4-8 people): The standard format. 2-4 hours per week, usually on fixed days. Affordable and motivating thanks to group dynamics.

Intensive course (15-25 hours per week): Ideal if you want to progress quickly. Often available as a block over 2-4 weeks. Particularly useful for newcomers who need to find their feet fast.

Individual lessons: Maximum flexibility in pace and topics. More expensive, but you learn exactly what you need. Ideal as a supplement to a group course.

Online live courses: Some language schools also offer their lessons via video call. Practical if you don't live in Palma.

Costs and funding

What does a language school cost?

Prices vary considerably. The cheapest option is the EOI at under 100 EUR per school year. Private language schools charge 120-250 EUR per month for group courses. Individual lessons cost 25-45 EUR per hour.

Is there any funding?

Govern Balear: The regional government regularly offers free or heavily subsidised language courses, especially for Catalan. For Spanish, occasional opportunities arise through the SOIB (Servei d'Ocupacio de les Illes Balears), the Balearic employment agency.

Bildungspramie (training voucher): If you are still registered in Germany, you may be able to apply for a training voucher (Bildungspramie) for language courses. This is particularly worthwhile for intensive courses.

Watch out for unknown providers

There are occasional providers on Mallorca operating without a licence or qualifications. Make sure the language school is registered with the Govern Balear or uses a recognised certification system (Instituto Cervantes, FEDELE).

Finding the right school

When choosing, you should think through the following questions:

Location and accessibility: Is the school convenient enough for you to attend regularly? If you live in Soller or Alcudia, a school in Palma only makes sense if you're prepared to make the journey.

Group size: Small groups (4-8 people) produce noticeably better results than classes with 20+ participants. Ask about the maximum group size before signing up.

Teacher qualifications: Are the teachers native speakers with an ELE certificate (Espanol como Lengua Extranjera, Spanish as a Foreign Language)? That makes a real difference to teaching quality.

Flexibility: Can you make up missed sessions? Are there different course times available? For working people this is an important factor.

Certificates: If you need an official language certificate (for example the DELE for a naturalisation application), check that the school prepares students for that exam.

Alternatives to a language school

A language school is not the only path. Often a combination works best:

Tandem partner: Many Spanish speakers on Mallorca want to learn German. Via platforms such as Tandem or ConversationExchange you can find language partners for a free exchange.

Online platforms: italki offers individual lessons with native speakers from 5 EUR per hour. Flexible, affordable and ideal as a supplement. A detailed comparison can be found in our article on Learning Spanish Online.

Immersion in everyday life: Order at restaurants in Spanish, read the newspaper, listen to Spanish radio. The more you use the language in daily life, the faster you improve. On Mallorca you have the opportunity to do that every single day.

VHS courses (Aula Cultural): Some municipalities offer affordable language courses through their cultural centres. Ask at your Ayuntamiento (town hall).

Tip: Combination is the key

The fastest progress comes from combining a language school, an app for vocabulary and everyday practice. 2-3 hours of lessons per week plus daily practice in real life beats 20 hours of classroom time alone.
