What is the Certificado Digital?
The Certificado Digital (digital certificate) is an electronic authentication and signature certificate issued by the Spanish authority FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre). It lets you log in to government websites and sign official documents digitally.
You need the Certificado Digital for tax returns, social security matters, administrative procedures, and many online services in Spain. It requires a valid NIE number.
Important: Cl@ve vs. Certificado Digital
Cl@ve is a simple login system with a username and password. The Certificado Digital is a certificate with authentication and a digital signature. For many dealings with Spanish authorities you need the Certificado Digital, not just Cl@ve.
Tips and common mistakes
Tip: write down your PIN
The PIN is essential for using your certificate. Write it down in a safe place - you cannot recover it later.
Mistake: missing your appointment
If you miss your booked appointment, you have to book a new one. That can add several weeks to the process.
Tip: back up before installing
Make a backup of your certificate before you install it in your browser for the first time. That way you are covered if something goes wrong.
Mistake: wrong browser setup
The certificate does not work automatically in every browser. You have to install it in your browser and may need to download additional software.
