What to expect

The Fira de Maig is Mallorca's oldest fair: King Sanç granted Sineu its market privilege in 1318, and ever since, the island's interior has gathered here every year on the first Sunday in May. What sets the Fira apart from all the other village fairs is the genuine livestock market. On the Es Fossar grounds you will find cows, sheep, goats, donkeys and horses of native Mallorcan breeds, plus poultry and rabbits. For many of the island's breeders the Fira is the most important date of the year, and things are correspondingly serious at the pens.

Around Sa Plaça and the Santa Maria church, the second part of the fair spreads out: crafts, ceramics and leather goods, alongside stalls selling sobrassada, cheese, honey, wine and olive oil from producers in the Pla de Mallorca. Farm machinery dealers show tractors next to lovingly restored classic cars, and in 2026 there were also exhibitions on the town's textile history and a display of remote-controlled trucks at the bus station. The mix of farmers' market, folk festival and family gathering draws tens of thousands of visitors from all over the island every year.

Sineu itself is worth the trip anyway: the town is considered the geographical centre of Mallorca, and its regular Wednesday market is also the only one on the island where live animals are still sold. The Fira de Maig is the large-scale edition of it, with far more stalls, music and programme.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: Easiest by train: the Palma-Manacor line stops right in Sineu, and it is about a 10-minute walk from the station to the centre. By car you have to park at the edge of town, as the access roads are closed.
  • Crowds: It is busiest in the morning between 10 and 13. If you want to see the animals in peace, come early; the livestock market is set up from about 8:30.
  • Costs: Entry is free. Expect 5 to 15 EUR for breakfast or snacks at the stalls; a pa amb oli in the bars around Sa Plaça costs about 8 to 12 EUR.
  • With children: The livestock market is the highlight for kids. Pushchairs are a struggle in the narrow lanes; a carrier is more practical.
  • 2027 date: The first Sunday of May 2027 falls on 2 May. The Ajuntament de Sineu usually confirms the date in spring.
