Renewing Your Driving License at 65+ in Spain: Process and Costs

If you need to renew your driving license in Spain and you are 65 or older, you have been on a shorter cycle since 2026: validity drops from ten years to five, and every renewal starts with a medical check. What changes at 65

Renewing a license in Spain is called renovación: you extend the validity of your license by passing a psychophysical examination at an approved driver assessment center, the Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores. If you pass the tests, the DGT reissues the document. There is no driving test.

Up to age 64, a Spanish license for categories A and B is valid for ten years. From your 65th birthday the cycle shortens to five years, and for the professional categories C and D to three years. How the check at the Centro de Reconocimiento works

On Mallorca you will find Centros de Reconocimiento in Palma and in almost every larger town, often near the driving schools. No appointment is needed, most centers work on a walk-in basis.

The whole visit rarely takes more than 30 minutes. If the tests go less well, that does not automatically mean losing your license. Far more often the doctor adds restrictions.

Restrictions: the codes on the back

Instead of withdrawing the license, the center can recommend personalized restrictions, which end up as numeric codes on the back of your license. Common ones include:

• Driving only with glasses or contact lenses (code 01)
• A limited top speed, for example 90 or 100 km/h
• Driving only within a certain radius of your home
• No driving at night

Old paper licenses with no expiry date must be exchanged within two years of registering your residence.
