The good news is you can apply for the NIE at the Spanish consulate that covers your area of residence in your home country, long before you pack a single box. Whether that route is worth it depends on your timing, how far you live from a consulate and how much patience you have for appointment portals. This article explains honestly who benefits from applying before the move and where the pitfalls are.

Spanish consulates handle NIE applications for foreigners living in their district. Which consulate is responsible for you depends on where you live, not on which city you would prefer. Consulates work strictly by district, so always check that you are applying to the right one before you book anything.

Check which Spanish consulate covers your area of residence. An application at the wrong consulate is rejected.
Book an appointment
Many consulates give out appointments through a booking portal. Free slots are often gone weeks or months in advance.
Fill in the EX-15 form
The official NIE application form. You must state an economic, professional or social reason for the request.

The administrative fee for assigning the NIE. Print the receipt and bring it to your appointment.
Attend in person
Most consulates issue the NIE only in person. Bring your original passport.

Depending on the consulate, small handling costs may be added. Anyone who hires a service provider or a gestoría pays considerably more.

Pros and cons versus applying on Mallorca
Before you decide, an honest comparison helps. Applying from your home country has clear advantages, but also real weaknesses.
In favour of applying before the move:
- You already have the NIE in hand before you relocate and can open an account or sign a rental contract right away.
- The appointment runs in your own country, often in a language you handle comfortably.
- You do not have to plan another trip to an office once you are on Mallorca.
Against it:
- Consulate appointments are chronically scarce. Waits of several months are common.
- You have to travel to the consulate, which may be far from where you live.
- On Mallorca itself it is often faster, especially with the help of a gestoría or a lawyer.

Tip: appointment patience
Keep an eye on the booking portal and check several times a day. Consulates release cancelled appointments at short notice. If you are flexible, you can often grab a slot that looked fully booked.
Who is the home-country route worth it for?
Applying before the move is worth it above all if you need the NIE before you relocate, for example because you are buying a property and the notary appointment falls before your move. It also suits anyone who lives near a consulate and is under no time pressure.
If instead you are moving at short notice, or you would rather sort everything out once on Mallorca, applying directly on the island is usually the faster and simpler path. Do I need a lawyer to apply from abroad?
No. You can file the application yourself if you fill in the EX-15 form correctly and prove a plausible reason. A gestoría or a lawyer only helps if you cannot get an appointment or want to be represented.
Is a NIE issued abroad valid across all of Mallorca?
Yes. The NIE is a nationwide number and valid everywhere in Spain, regardless of where you applied for it. You do not have to reapply after the move.
