Sooner or later every car needs a mechanic, and at the latest before the next ITV inspection the question comes up: where do I take it? Finding a good car repair shop on Mallorca is not hard once you know your rights as a customer and how to spot a reputable business. Spain's rules for repair shops are surprisingly consumer-friendly, hardly anyone just knows them. In this post you will learn what a written estimate has to include, which hourly rates are typical on the island, how long the warranty on a repair lasts and what to do when something goes wrong.

At a glance

Every repair shop in Spain must offer you a written estimate before starting work and display its hourly rates where customers can see them. Under Real Decreto 1457/1986, every repair carries a warranty of three months or 2,000 kilometers. If there is a dispute, the Hoja de Reclamaciones, the official complaint form of the consumer protection authority, is your tool.

Dealer workshop, independent garage or expat-run business

As almost everywhere, Mallorca has three kinds of repair shops, and the price gap between them is noticeable. The brand dealerships (servicio oficial) are nearly all located in the industrial belt around Palma, work with original parts and manufacturer specifications, and usually charge 70 to well over 100 euros per hour. Independent garages (talleres multimarca) exist in every larger town, with hourly rates more in the range of 40 to 60 euros. For a car that is out of manufacturer warranty there is little reason to avoid the independent garage: EU rules allow servicing outside the brand network without losing the warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer's specifications.

The third option is the expat-run workshop, often with English- or German-speaking staff. There are quite a few on the island, mainly in the Son Bugadelles industrial estate near Santa Ponsa, around Palma and in the southeast. They are rarely the cheapest, but when it comes to an expensive diagnosis or a complaint, being able to explain the problem in your own language is worth a lot. You will find some of these businesses with ratings and contact details in our directory of car repair shops.

Tip: prices are posted, really

Spanish repair shops are required to display their hourly rates and surcharges clearly in the reception area. Have a look at the board before you place the order. If there is no board at all, that is a bad sign and reason enough to go elsewhere.

The estimate: you have a right to it

The most important document is the presupuesto, the written estimate. It is regulated by Real Decreto 1457/1986, which applies to all vehicle repair shops nationwide. The shop must offer it to you before work begins. You can waive it in writing, but that is exactly what you should not do for larger repairs, because without a presupuesto you have nothing to compare the invoice against later.

A proper estimate includes:

  • details of the shop and the owner, plus the vehicle's plate number and mileage
  • the items to be repaired, itemized by parts and labor
  • the total price including taxes
  • the expected completion date
  • how long the offer is valid, at least 12 working days

Important in practice: if an additional fault turns up during the repair, the shop is not allowed to simply fix it and add it to the bill. It has to inform you first and get your approval. Also ask for the replaced parts back. You are entitled to them, provided you say so when you place the order. Reputable shops put the old parts in the trunk without being asked.

Does a repair shop on Mallorca have to give me an estimate? Yes. Under Real Decreto 1457/1986, every customer is entitled to a written estimate that is valid for at least 12 working days. You can only waive it explicitly and in writing. If you turn the offer down, the shop may charge a fee for preparing it.

Warranty: three months or 2,000 kilometers

Every repair done in a Spanish workshop carries a legal warranty of three months or 2,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. If the same fault reappears within that period, the shop has to fix it free of charge, parts and labor included. The warranty is void if another business has worked on the same part in the meantime or if you have done the work yourself.

So keep every invoice. It is your proof of warranty and at the same time documents the service history, which is worth real money when you sell the car later. An invoice with the IVA (VAT) shown separately is also the precondition for making any complaint about a botched repair. Paying cash without a receipt may save a few euros, but in a dispute you are left with nothing.

If the repair is related to an accident, check your policy first: some Spanish insurers require you to use partner workshops or reduce the payout if you choose your own. What sets the different policies apart is covered in our guide to car insurance in Spain.

Complaints: how the Hoja de Reclamaciones works

The Hoja de Reclamaciones is an official complaint form that every repair shop in Spain must keep in stock and hand over immediately on request. One copy goes to the consumer protection authority, which reviews the case, mediates and can fine the business for violations.

The process is simple: you fill out the form right there in the shop, describe the issue in a few sentences (Spanish or Catalan, a translation app will do in a pinch), keep your copy and file the complaint with the Balearic consumer protection authority. The responsible body is the Direcció General de Consum of the Balearic government. Attach copies of the estimate, the invoice and photos, which speeds things up considerably. Simply asking for the form often works wonders: many disputes over an inflated bill get resolved before pen touches paper.

If a business refuses to hand over the form, you can call the Policía Local. That sounds drastic, but it is the intended route and the officers handle it routinely.

Conclusion

The best way to find a reliable car repair shop on Mallorca is through recommendations from other residents and by watching how the shop handles the estimate: a business that offers a written presupuesto unprompted, posts its prices and returns the old parts usually does clean work on the car too. Your key rights are set out in Real Decreto 1457/1986: an estimate valid for at least 12 working days, mandatory approval for additional work and a three-month or 2,000-kilometer warranty on every repair. And if something does go wrong, the Hoja de Reclamaciones is a lever that works surprisingly well. If your inspection is coming up anyway, the ITV guide lists all deadlines and stations on the island.
