Applying for the NIE number online, without a trip to a government office, sounds appealing. And there really are official Spanish administration portals that let you handle parts of the process digitally. There is one catch that surprises a lot of newcomers, though: to actually get the NIE issued, you almost always have to show up once in person. This guide walks through what works online and what does not.

What "applying for the NIE online" actually means

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the tax identification number for every foreigner in Spain. You need it to rent or buy a home, open a bank account, register a car and deal with almost any authority on Mallorca. Without it you hit a wall quickly.

In Spain, "apply online" means something narrower than you might expect. The system draws a clear line between administrative steps that can be prepared digitally and the actual act of issuing the number, which requires you to be there. Step 1: Book the appointment (Cita Previa) online

The first step is booking your appointment online. Without a Cita Previa you will not get through the door at the immigration office or the Policía Nacional in Palma. The booking runs through the official portal of the Spanish administration.

Go to sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es, pick the NIE option under "Extranjería", select the province "Illes Balears" and the responsible office in Palma. Then choose a date and time from the available slots.

For the booking you need:

• Passport or national ID card (number and expiry date)
• A valid email address for the confirmation
• Your name exactly as it appears in your passport

The confirmation email contains your appointment and a barcode. Print it or save it on your phone, because that is your entry ticket.

Step 2: Fill in form EX-15 digitally

The official application form for the NIE number is the EX-15. You can download it free of charge from the portal of the Spanish interior ministry, fill it in on your computer and print it out.

When filling it in, watch out for:

• Full name exactly as in your passport, no shortened versions
• A clear reason for the application, for example "Compraventa de inmueble" (property purchase), "Apertura de cuenta bancaria" (opening a bank account) or "Trabajo" (work)
• The passport number as a continuous string with no spaces

Step 3: Pay the Tasa 790 012 online

The processing fee for the NIE is 9.84 EUR (as of July 2026) and runs through form Tasa 790, Código 012. You can prepare this payment digitally too.

On the tax portal of the Agencia Tributaria you select Tasa 790, complete Modelo 012 and pay by credit card, online banking or at the counter of a Spanish bank. After paying you get a receipt, and you have to bring a printout of it to your appointment.

Can I pay the tasa without Cl@ve or a digital certificate? Yes. Modelo 012 is accessible without a digital identity. You can fill in the form, print it and pay it in cash at any Spanish bank. You get the receipt right there at the counter.

Where the online route runs out

For most newcomers on Mallorca the rule is simple: handling a first NIE application entirely online, without showing up in person, is currently not possible. Spain does have the Cl@ve system (Cl@ve PIN and Cl@ve Permanente) that covers many administrative acts digitally. A first NIE application is not one of them, because the identity check requires proof in person.

What you can realistically do online:

1. Book the Cita Previa
2. Fill in and print form EX-15
3. Pay the Tasa 790 012 and print the receipt

What has to happen in person at the appointment:

• Present your original passport plus a copy
• Sign the application
• The official issues your NIE certificate

If you have everything ready, the appointment itself usually takes no more than 30 minutes.
