If you register as an autonomo in Spain for the first time in 2026, you do not pay the full income-based social security contribution in your first twelve months, you pay the Tarifa Plana instead: a reduced flat rate of 80 EUR a month. With the MEI surcharge, the real amount in 2026 comes to 88.64 EUR. If you are still earning little after that, you can extend the discount for another year, but you have to apply in time. This post covers what the Tarifa Plana costs in 2026, how the extension works, and which mistakes end up making it expensive.

At a glance

The Tarifa Plana lowers your social security rate as a new autonomo to a flat 80 EUR for twelve months, a real 88.64 EUR a month in 2026 with the MEI surcharge. If your net profit stays below the minimum wage of 1,221 EUR, you extend the reduced rate for another twelve months through Import@ss. The application has to be filed before the end of month twelve, or you pay the full income-based contribution from month 13 onward.

What the Tarifa Plana is and what it costs in 2026

The Tarifa Plana is a reduced social security rate for new autonomos in Spain: if you register as self-employed for the first time, or after a break of at least two years, you pay a flat 80 EUR a month for the first twelve months instead of the income-based contribution (Art. 38 ter Ley 20/2007).

The legal basis is Article 38 ter of the Estatuto del Trabajo Autonomo, which guarantees the reduced rate to new founders and to people returning to self-employment after a break of at least two years. For the first twelve months, it applies regardless of how much you actually earn. Since the 2022 pension reform, the MEI surcharge is added on top, the Mecanismo de Equidad Intergeneracional, which adds an extra charge for all contributors on top of the basic pension. That turns the 80 EUR into a real 88.64 EUR a month in 2026, around 1,063 EUR over the first year.

How to apply for the extension into year two

After the first twelve months, the Tarifa Plana ends automatically if you do nothing. If you want to extend it for another year, you have to take action.

1

Estimate your net profit realistically

You only get the extension if your expected net profit stays below the minimum wage (SMI), which for 2026 under Real Decreto 126/2026 is 1,221 EUR a month based on 14 payments. Calculate conservatively, since a later discrepancy with Hacienda can trigger repayment demands.

2

File the declaration through Import@ss in time

Submit the declaration of your expected net income before the end of month twelve through the Seguridad Social's Import@ss portal. Missing the deadline costs you the discount from month 13 onward.

3

Check the confirmation and the direct debit

After approval, check the first direct debit in month thirteen. If the amount is off, contact the Seguridad Social directly or have your gestoria sort it out.

You file the application directly through the Seguridad Social's Import@ss portal, the same portal your original autonomo registration went through. How that initial registration works overall is covered in the guide Working as an Autonomo in Spain.

What the extension is worth over three years

Whether the extension is worth it comes down to the numbers. If you pay the reduced rate in year one, meet the conditions in year two, and also use the Cuota Cero in the Balearics, you get through the founding phase considerably cheaper than someone who misses both.

PostenKostenDauer
Year 1 (month 1 to 12)88.64 EUR/month, approx. 1,063 EUR for the yearguaranteed, regardless of profit
Year 2 with extensionreduced rate continuesonly if net profit stays below 1,221 EUR/month
Year 2 without extensionfull income-based contributionfrom month 13
Year 1 to 3 on top (Balearics)up to 175 EUR/month refundedvia Cuota Cero, see below

In the Balearics, the Cuota Cero adds another layer on top for the first three years. It refunds exactly what you already paid at the reduced rate to the Seguridad Social, so social security effectively costs you nothing during the founding phase. Without the national extension, though, you have no basis for the Cuota Cero to build on in year two.

The most common Tarifa Plana mistakes

The rules sound simple, but in practice the discount often fails over small details:

  • Missing checkbox at registration: if it is not explicitly requested at the alta, the system immediately calculates the full contribution, and a retroactive correction is only possible in limited cases.
  • Mismatched date with Hacienda: if your registration date with the tax office differs from the one with the Seguridad Social, the administration checks the details more closely and processing takes longer.
  • Deregistering during the discount period: if you deregister within the twelve or twenty-four months and register again later, you lose the current discount and do not start over automatically.
  • Debts with the Seguridad Social: outstanding contributions from an earlier period of self-employment block approval of the reduced rate again, even if more than two years have passed since.

Warning: retroactive corrections are rare

If you forget the Tarifa Plana at registration, in most cases you cannot claim it retroactively for months already billed. Check your confirmation right after the alta, not only when the first payment goes out.

Can you lose the Tarifa Plana if you take a short break in between? Yes. If you deregister and register again within the twelve or twenty-four months, that counts as a new registration after a break, not a continuation of the current discount. The reduced rate only starts fresh if at least two years have passed since your last registration.

Conclusion

The Tarifa Plana makes your first year as an autonomo predictable: 88.64 EUR a month instead of a contribution that would otherwise track your actual profit. The extension into year two is not automatic, it depends on a declaration filed on time through Import@ss and a net profit below 1,221 EUR a month. If you are unsure whether all your details are correct at registration, have a gestoria on Mallorca check it before the first payment goes out.
