Public Holidays on Mallorca 2026: All Dates at a Glance

If you live on Mallorca or plan to settle here permanently, you should know the public holidays on Mallorca in 2026. They affect appointments with public offices, opening hours of banks and shops, and the rhythm of island life. The special thing: Spain has three levels of public holidays, national, regional (Balearic Islands) and local municipal holidays. Together that adds up to 14 public holidays a year on Mallorca. The twelve general public holidays in the Balearic Islands in 2026

These twelve days apply equally on Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera in 2026. The list is set each year by the Balearic Government and published in the BOIB, the official gazette of the Balearic Islands:

• Thu, January 1 - Año Nuevo (New Year's Day)
• Tue, January 6 - Epifanía del Señor (Epiphany)
• Mon, March 2 - Dia de les Illes Balears (Balearic Islands Day, moved from Sunday, March 1)
• Thu, April 2 - Jueves Santo (Maundy Thursday)
• Fri, April 3 - Viernes Santo (Good Friday)
• Mon, April 6 - Dilluns de Pasqua (Easter Monday)
• Fri, May 1 - Día del Trabajo (Labour Day)
• Sat, August 15 - Asunción de la Virgen (Assumption of Mary)
• Mon, October 12 - Fiesta Nacional de España (National Day)
• Tue, December 8 - Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception)
• Fri, December 25 - Navidad (Christmas Day)
• Sat, December 26 - Segona Festa de Nadal (Sant Esteve, second day of Christmas)

Two dates you might expect are missing: November 1 (All Saints' Day) and December 6 (Constitution Day) both fall on a Sunday in 2026. The Balearic Islands do not make up for either of them, so they do not give you an extra day off.

Regional holidays of the Balearic Islands

Some of the twelve days apply only in the Balearic Islands and not throughout Spain:

• March 2, 2026 - Dia de les Illes Balears. The actual date is March 1, the day the Statute of Autonomy came into force in 1983. If March 1 falls on a Sunday, the day off moves to the Monday. That is the case in 2026, so the day off is Monday, March 2.
• April 6, 2026 - Dilluns de Pasqua (Easter Monday). In many parts of Spain Easter Monday is a normal working day.
• December 26, 2026 - Segona Festa de Nadal (Sant Esteve). More on this in the December section below.

Local municipal holidays (fiestas locales)

Every municipality on Mallorca sets two local holidays of its own each year. They apply only in that municipality and differ from town to town. Usually they are the patron saint's days or big village festivals. In Palma, Sant Sebastià on January 20 is one of them.

December 2026: public holidays and shop opening days

In December three public holidays sit close together, and at the same time shops are allowed to open on certain Sundays and holidays. That causes confusion every year.

• December 6 falls on a Sunday and is not made up for.
• December 8 is a Tuesday. Many people take Monday, December 7, as a bridge day.
• December 25 is a Friday and a public holiday throughout Spain.
• December 26 is a Saturday. It is a regional public holiday in the Balearic Islands (Segona Festa de Nadal or Sant Esteve). In many other autonomous communities of Spain it is not, which is why you will find contradictory information online.

A public holiday in the Balearic Islands does not automatically mean everything is closed. Each year the Balearic Government decides on which Sundays and public holidays shops may open. In 2026 there are ten such days, including Sunday, December 20, and Saturday, December 26. Large shops may therefore open on December 26, 2026, while government offices, banks and doctors' surgeries remain closed.

School Christmas holidays in the Balearic Islands run from December 23, 2026 to January 6, 2027 inclusive. January 1 and January 6 are normally public holidays in 2027 as well, but the official 2027 calendar has not been published yet. What is open on public holidays?

On national and regional holidays the general rule in Spain is: public offices, banks and many shops are closed. But there are differences.

Closed on public holidays:

• Government offices and agencies (no citas previas)
• Banks and savings banks
• Many smaller retail shops
• Notaries and gestorías (often on bridge days too)

Usually open on public holidays:

• Supermarkets in tourist municipalities and on the permitted shop opening days (often with reduced hours)
• Pharmacies on duty rota - one per zone is always open
• Restaurants and cafés
• Petrol stations
• Emergency rooms and the medical emergency service (always reachable on 112)

Tourist areas such as Palma, Alcúdia or Cala Ratjada often have fewer restrictions on public holidays than town centres in many other European countries, because the tourism industry has to keep running.

Bridge days and puentes in 2026

Spaniards love the "puente", the bridge day between a public holiday and the weekend. 2026 offers some attractive puentes:

• January 1 falls on a Thursday: a bridge day on Friday, January 2 is possible
• March 2 (Balearic Islands Day) is a Monday: long weekend
• Easter: Maundy Thursday (April 2), Good Friday (April 3) and Easter Monday (April 6) make a long weekend from Thursday to Monday
• August 15 falls on a Saturday - no bridge day
• October 12 falls on a Monday - long weekend
• December 8 falls on a Tuesday: bridge day on Monday, December 7
• December 25 and 26 fall on Friday and Saturday

Planning public holidays and official appointments

If you are planning trips to public offices, such as applying for an NIE, empadronamiento, exchanging your driving licence or registering a vehicle, always check the holiday calendar first. Citas previas (appointment bookings) cannot be booked on public holidays, and waiting times often grow considerably around long puentes.

What counts as a public holiday on Mallorca? A public holiday (día festivo) on Mallorca is a day on which, under Spanish or Balearic law, there is no obligation to work. Employers who have staff work on a public holiday must grant a compensatory day off or pay a supplement. There are three categories: national, regional and local holidays.

Can I see a doctor on a public holiday on Mallorca? Yes. The medical emergency service is always available. Every zone has doctors on call (PAC - Punto de Atención Continuada). The general emergency number in Spain is 112.
