When is the cheapest time to book?
The golden rule: 4-8 weeks in advance
Studies show that the best time to book for European short-haul flights is 4 to 8 weeks before departure. Book too early and prices are still high (airlines are testing demand); book too late and it gets expensive (remaining seats).
Cheapest days of the week
- Tuesday and Wednesday are statistically the cheapest days to fly
- Friday and Sunday are the most expensive (weekend travellers)
- Flying out on Tuesday, returning on Wednesday is the cheapest combination
Seasonal price differences
| Period | Price level | Typical prices (one-way) |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Low | 20-50 EUR |
| March to May | Medium | 40-80 EUR |
| June to August | High | 80-200 EUR |
| September to October | Medium | 40-80 EUR |
| School holidays (all) | High | 80-150 EUR |
| Christmas/Easter | Very high | 100-250 EUR |
Setting up price alerts
Use the price alert feature on Google Flights or Skyscanner. Enter your desired route and you will be notified when the price drops. This is especially useful for regular travellers.
Tip: Stay flexible with dates and airports
Google Flights shows you the cheapest days across the whole month with its "flexible dates" function. And sometimes a flight from Dusseldorf-Weeze (Ryanair) is 80 EUR cheaper than from Dusseldorf main airport (Eurowings), even though they are only 70 km apart.
Resident discount: 75% reduction
The Descuento de Residente is a massive advantage for everyone registered in the Balearic Islands. Since 2018 the discount has been 75% off the flight price.
Who is eligible?
- Everyone who has their empadronamiento (local registration) in the Balearic Islands
- Valid for Spanish citizens and EU citizens with a Residencia (residence certificate)
- Also children and babies
What does the discount apply to?
- Flights between the Balearic Islands and the Spanish mainland (e.g. Palma to Barcelona, Palma to Madrid)
- Flights between the Balearic Islands (e.g. Palma to Ibiza, Palma to Menorca)
- NOT for flights to Germany, Austria, Switzerland or other EU countries
How do I apply for the discount?
- When booking the flight you enter your NIE/DNI number
- The airline automatically checks your resident status
- The discount is applied directly to the flight price
- At check-in you must show your ID (NIE/TIE or DNI)
Calculation example
| Route | Standard price | Resident price |
|---|---|---|
| Palma to Barcelona | 80 EUR | 20 EUR |
| Palma to Madrid | 100 EUR | 25 EUR |
| Palma to Ibiza | 50 EUR | 12.50 EUR |
Important: Discount applies to domestic routes only
The resident discount only applies to flights within Spain (including the Canary Islands). There is no discount for flights to Germany or other countries. If you fly via Barcelona to Germany, you receive the discount only on the Palma-Barcelona leg.
Best flight comparison portals
Google Flights
- Strength: Best overview, flexible date search, price alerts
- Booking: Redirects to the airline website (no middleman fees)
- URL: flights.google.com
Skyscanner
- Strength: Also compares smaller airlines and intermediaries
- Booking: Via intermediaries or directly with the airline
- URL: skyscanner.de
Momondo / KAYAK
- Strength: Good price prediction ("prices will rise/fall")
- Booking: Via intermediaries
- URL: kayak.de
Directly with the airline
- Strength: No middleman, easier rebooking/cancellation
- Recommendation: Always check the price on the airline's own website, as it is sometimes cheaper there than through comparison portals
Tip: Always check directly with the airline
Book directly with the airline where possible. If there are flight changes or cancellations, it is much easier when you have booked directly. Intermediaries such as eDreams or Opodo often make rebooking unnecessarily complicated.
Hand luggage rules compared
