While places like Santanyí or Andratx have long been shaped by rising prices, here you still find a real Mallorcan country town with working infrastructure. What makes Llucmajor a place to live

Llucmajor is a country town in the south of Mallorca and also the name of the municipality, which includes several coastal villages and residential estates. The main town lies a good ten kilometers inland from the sea and was historically shaped by agriculture and shoemaking, not by tourism.

Covering around 327 square kilometers, Llucmajor is the largest municipality in the Balearics, home to just under 40,000 people in total. Most people live in the main town and the coastal villages, with fields, holm oaks and plenty of empty land in between.

That mix is exactly the appeal: you live in a town where everyday life goes on all year round, not in an estate that pulls down the shutters in November. The municipality has around 25 kilometers of coastline, and it is surprisingly varied. Cala Pi in the south is a narrow, rock-framed cove with a sandy beach, flanked by quiet residential areas. Badia Gran, Badia Blava and Sa Torre are classic clifftop urbanizaciones: lots of peace, sea views, but hardly any infrastructure of their own. At the northern edge of the municipality begins s'Arenal, with its promenade, sandy beach and all the bustle that comes with it.

In between lies plenty of unbuilt coastline, the cape with its lighthouse and the Talaiotic village of Capocorb Vell. Golfers have Son Antem, a 36-hole course, right on their doorstep. Important for choosing where to live: in the urbanizaciones you live cheaply and quietly, but you depend on a car for the bakery, doctor and school. Connections and community

Via the Ma-19 motorway you are at the airport in around 20 minutes from the edge of town and in Palma in 25 to 30 minutes. That makes Llucmajor interesting for commuters and frequent flyers too. TIB buses connect the main town and the coastal villages with Palma, but a car remains practically indispensable for life in the municipality.

There is no organized expat community in the main town like in Santa Ponsa or Peguera, but many German- and English-speaking residents live in the s'Arenal area and the urbanizaciones. If you are looking to connect, you will find it through the market, sports clubs and the municipality's fiestas. Good Spanish noticeably helps in everyday life, because Llucmajor has remained a Mallorcan town.
