Business Bank Account for Autónomos in Spain: Required or Not?

A business bank account is not a legal requirement for autónomos in Spain. Even so, as a self-employed worker you quickly run into the question of whether a separate account for invoices and business expenses is worth it. The Seguridad Social collects your cuota every month by direct debit, Hacienda wants to see traceable payments if it ever audits you, and if your clients are abroad, every transfer can cost you money on the exchange rate. This post covers when a separate account makes sense, which IBAN the authorities accept, and how a Spanish bank, Wise Business, and Qonto differ in everyday use.
At a glance
A separate business bank account is not a legal requirement for autónomos in Spain, but it is practical. The Seguridad Social accepts any SEPA IBAN for the cuota direct debit, including a foreign IBAN or one from Wise or Qonto. What matters when choosing: fees, minimum turnover, and whether the bank keeps your invoices and expenses cleanly separated.
A business bank account for autónomos is a bank account that a self-employed person in Spain uses exclusively for business income and expenses, kept separate from their personal account. It is not a special type of account, just an ordinary account you deliberately use only for business.
Do you need a separate business bank account as an autónomo?
There is no legal requirement for autónomos to have a business bank account. You are allowed to invoice clients, pay your cuota, and deduct expenses even if everything runs through your personal checking account. In practice, that quickly gets messy: once salary payments, personal transfers, and business invoices mix on one account, you have to match every single transaction by hand for your annual tax return. If Hacienda ever audits you, you need to document every business expense anyway. An account that carries only business transactions makes exactly that easier and saves you time on every quarterly Modelo 130 filing.
We cover the basics of registering as an autónomo in our autónomo guide. How to invoice correctly once you are registered is in our guide to invoicing.
Direct debit for your cuota: which IBAN does the Seguridad Social accept?
The Seguridad Social collects your monthly cuota automatically by direct debit; paying in cash is not an option. Many autónomos assume this requires a Spanish account. It does not: under the EU rule against IBAN discrimination, every bank in the eurozone must accept direct debits from foreign SEPA accounts too, as confirmed by the Spanish consumer protection authority. A German IBAN, a Wise IBAN, or a Qonto IBAN works exactly like an account at a Spanish bank, as long as there is enough money on it on the due date.
How much you pay depends on your estimated net income. In 2026 the minimum contribution is 200 euros a month for net income up to 670 euros, as we break down in our post on the autónomo contribution brackets for 2026. Details on due dates and the direct debit process are published by the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social.
Spanish bank, Wise Business, or Qonto: which one fits you?
The three options differ mainly in fees, minimum turnover, and how well they connect to your gestoría's software. Before you decide, it is worth checking these points:
- Monthly base fee and whether there is a free account for low turnover
- Cost of receiving payments from abroad, outside the eurozone
- Whether receipts and invoices are managed directly in the account or go to your gestoría by hand
- Waiting time and required documents to open an account as a resident or non-resident
| Posten | Kosten | Dauer |
|---|---|---|
| BBVA, Santander or CaixaBank (business account) | often €0/month | ongoing |
| Qonto Basic (autónomo plan) | €9/month | ongoing |
| Qonto Smart (autónomo plan) | €19/month | ongoing |
| Wise Business | €50 one-time, then €0 | one-time |
Watch out: the fine print on free accounts
Several large Spanish banks now advertise a business account with no base fee. Ask specifically about conditions such as a minimum number of card payments or a minimum quarterly turnover before you sign up. What is free in the first year can come with strings attached afterward.
Receiving payments from abroad without losing money on the exchange
If your clients are abroad, they usually pay into an account in their own country or currency. If that money then lands on a purely Spanish account, some banks apply a markup when they convert it, even when both accounts nominally use euros. Wise Business solves this by giving you local account details in several currencies and converting at the real mid-market rate, so you keep more of what you earn. As described above, any SEPA IBAN works for the cuota direct debit regardless of which provider holds it.
Do I need my own business bank account as an autónomo? No, there is no legal requirement. For a clear tax return and for a Hacienda audit, though, a separate account is still noticeably more practical than a mixed personal account.
Does the Seguridad Social accept a foreign IBAN for the cuota? Yes. Under the EU rule against IBAN discrimination, every direct debit in the eurozone must work with any SEPA IBAN, including a German one or one from Wise or Qonto.
Conclusion
A business bank account is not required for autónomos in Spain, but it is a small effort with a big payoff for your bookkeeping. For the cuota direct debit, only a valid SEPA IBAN matters, not the country of the bank. If most of your clients are in Spain and your bank offers a free business account, staying there is simplest. If you receive payments from abroad, Wise Business saves you money on the exchange rate. If you want to manage a lot of invoices and receipts, Qonto's bookkeeping features help. In the end, the right account depends on your client base and turnover, not on any regulation.
